With the huge potential of lithium-ion battery recycling units, NextEng entered into an exclusive partnership with Hydromet Technology Solutions Limited, an extractive metallurgy technology company based in India for their Hy-BRec lithium-ion battery recycling technology.

The Lithium-Ion battery recycling process technology, Hy-BRec, has been demonstrated at a bench scale and is capable of recovering copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, lithium either in their pure form or as their salts. The Hy-BRec process has shown close to 95% recovery of metals and graphite after pre-treatment and organic removal step.

Processing of battery waste to extract raw materials has several advantages. The environmental and health hazards resulting from dumping of these metals is avoided. Besides developing part sufficiency, the supply of individual metals allows a wider range of battery Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to use the raw material. Reprocessing of the waste also offers business continuity and greater resilience to manage the mobility vision for the UK.

The technology is in the direction of building a circular and sustainable economy for the electric vehicle battery market and targets to fill the gap between the end-of-life battery disposal and the metal supply to the battery manufacturers in an economically viable facility in the UK.

The Hy-BRec technology offers the following differentiators:

● Generic battery-recycle process can process battery waste from a wide range of OEMs /generations. Excludes only ferrous based batteries. This key feature accelerates pace towards break-even capacity

● Recovery of all valuable metals with high purity and recovery percentages.

● The technology can be configured to produce no solid waste.

● Future-ready process that accommodates higher Ni content in batteries. The process is flexible to accommodate both currently used EV batteries and futuristic solid-state batteries.

● Residual electrical energy in the spent batteries is used to support energy-intensive electrowinning and roasting steps improving energy efficiency and carbon footprint.

● Smart engineering and modularised design allows a more flexible way to stage capacity enhancement and meet future needs

● Cost-competitive economical design when benchmarked with other technologies around the world. Engineering capabilities backed by experts with >30 years of experience in the design and engineering of process plants.

NextEng and Hydromet will collaborate to improve the technology maturity, compliance and techno-economic aspects of the process.

NextEng with Hydromet will provide the following services
